Studies on landscape connectivity are crucial in delineating and evaluating priority sites or protected areas that allow for in situ conservation of natural resources, ecosystem services, and their associated cultural values through the participation of landowners. The demand for innovative solutions at the international, national, and regional levels is increasing, and there is a push to promote the formal recognition of ecological corridors to develop conservation networks for biodiversity.
In September 2022, the First National Symposium on Landscape Connectivity Studies was held at the Center for Research in Environmental Geography (CIGA) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Morelia campus. The event brought together various sectors of society, academia, and decision-making associations involved in environmental land planning.
Furthermore, this symposium led to the creation of the Mexican Network of Landscape Connectivity Studies (REMECP). To continue the agreements and promote collaborative work, individuals forming the Technical Academic Committee of the Network were elected. Dr. Edgar Gregorio Leija Loredo and M.C. María Jesús Pérez Hernández serve as President and Vice President, respectively; Dr. Ricardo Eaton González as Representative for the Northeast Region, Dr. Francisco Javier Sahagún Sánchez as Representative for the Western Region, Dr. Angélica Camacho Cruz as Representative for the Southwest Region, and from the Reforestamos Mexico team, M.C. Juan Esteban Torres Vivar as Representative for the Central South Region. Additionally, Dr. Manuel E. Mendoza was included as an Honorary Representative.
As of now, REMECP consists of 35 active members and has begun to establish connections and meetings with other networks, such as the Mexican Network of Basins (REMEXCU), and Civil Associations (Reforestamos Mexico), with the aim of creating synergies and collaborations in the medium term for its consolidation.
Additionally, a website will be created with information about REMECP to disseminate various events and activities such as presentations and workshops, among many others.
We invite anyone interested to explore the publications made by REMECP on their official Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/REDREMECP
