Why talk about forest education and not environmental?
24 junio, 2019
Environmental education is an effective way to bring about changes in the way people interact with ecosystems, both in cities and in nature. It aims to empower people to make responsible decisions regarding the environment.
However, the current environmental issues require specific, measurable, and tangible solutions. Forest education can be this solution, as it focuses on achieving sustainable management of forest resources.
One of the goals of environmental education is for people to understand the complexity of the environment and acquire the necessary skills and values to participate responsibly in the improvement and preservation of our natural surroundings.
Environmental education should be the foundation of a different and environmentally respectful lifestyle. It serves to raise awareness among society about the problems we currently face, provides the necessary knowledge to find solutions, and instills social values and an interest in caring for the environment.
Environmental education is a process in which we develop new capacities and skills for the environment. Forest education serves as a useful tool for this task.
While university education in forestry has made progress, there is still a long way to go. There are few dedicated forest experts to train university students interested in the field.
That’s why at Reforestamos, we created the Young Forest Entrepreneur program, preparing professionals for sustainable forest management.
A first effort to increase awareness of forest education is to inform people about what it is and who is responsible for this study.
Forest engineers are professionals responsible for ensuring the sustainable management of forest resources, including wildlife, and seeking economic, social, and environmental benefits.
They are involved in the management and utilization of forests, as well as timber and non- timber resources. They promote forests in cities, biodiversity of flora and fauna, and community development through businesses. They also advocate for policies in favor of forests and the people living in them.
Currently, the management and utilization of renewable resources are highly sought-after areas of work for forest engineers, as there is a need to maximize resource utilization while caring for our forests.
Additionally, forest engineering promotes responsible industry, both in the products obtained from ecosystems and in the practices companies undertake in their operations.
Another fundamental role of forest professionals is contributing to the permanence of forests and the greening of cities. They take care of the lungs of urban areas and propose spaces where planting more trees is optimal. In this way, it improves the quality of life for people and the air they breathe.
The lack of forest education represents an obstacle for professionals in the field as well as for society in general. However, every crisis is an opportunity, so it can be an area of growth for those with ideas for forest entrepreneurship.
We are a civil society organization committed to entrepreneurs with innovative ideas in favor of forests. Our business model enhances environmental benefits and impacts the communities we work with.
We are part of the Forest Entrepreneurs Ecosystem where the forestry and entrepreneurial sectors converge with the goal of creating and strengthening companies that promote more and better forests for the future.
Forest education promotes the development of organizations that, like ours, have a focus on forest innovation and represent a new way of making an impact. Speaking of forest education, and not environmental education, translates into the creation of tangible, real, and measurable solutions to the problems that plague the environment.
