Momentum BBVA 2019: Companies Changing the World

Momentum is a Global Corporate Social Responsibility initiative by the BBVA Group aimed at promoting social entrepreneurship. In Mexico, the program is led by BBVA. The 2019 edition sought to boost the growth of companies that are changing the world with innovative and sustainable initiatives.
I had the fortune of participating in the 2019 edition as a representative of the forestry company I work for, Unidad Topia. In total, one hundred companies participated in four development phases. The first was the training phase, where we could choose different training packages provided by the Tecnológico de Monterrey. In my case, I selected topics related to Management Skills. I know that for some people, whose professional background is business, finance, and administration, these concepts are basic. However, for me, they were substantive topics. It is challenging for people who study a career oriented towards the study and use of natural resources, agronomy, and related subjects to have a clear and concise idea about the aspects inherent in establishing a successful company.
My favorite part—the most dynamic in the scheme—was the Acceleration and Networking event held at the BBVA Bancomer Tower in Mexico City.
Representatives of twenty companies gathered there with the BBVA and New Ventures teams for a week. We learned many things, from basic financial aspects to how to pitch an idea in three minutes. It was very rewarding to enjoy the excellent treatment from the Momentum team.
In this edition, five forestry companies participated: Alianza Selva Maya, Expediciones Sierra Norte, Chicza, Bosques de Paz, and Unidad Topia. I am proud of the participation of each of my fellow forestry colleagues; they raised the profile of Mexico’s forests and are putting in all the effort to work for the empowerment of community forestry.
Personally, I believe that this is the path our sector should take. We want successful, creative, and innovative forestry companies. The participation of young people and women in the sector—in any role and in the production chain—is of utmost importance for the future of our forests.
Finally, we had mentoring sessions with specialists on topics that we consider important for our companies. These consultations could be taken together with other members of the company, so knowledge could be shared.
In the final stretch, we would get to know the companies that earned the On-site Specialized Course by EGADE Business School. Additionally, these companies would have the opportunity to present their pitch to investors at the final Momentum Networking even t. Regardless of the companies that made it to the final, the great opportunity that BBVA Momentum gave us is invaluable, especially for those of us who did not study these topics. We must open our minds and be involved in the business world.
Speaking of the forestry sector, the business landscape has not been concrete. Let’s remove the chip of ambiguous expectations from forestry engineers, environmentalists, biologists, etc., and immerse ourselves in this business world. More than taking care of our forests— which, I believe, is our obligation by principle—we must be competent and innovative for the Mexican forestry sector to prosper. Expectations must come from this entrepreneurial spirit, which must arise from the communities themselves. We have to learn to channel that power of emergence; let’s stop depending on others and set our active mode in motion.
In short, there is much ground to cover, and with this exercise, motivation is in full swing. I have nothing but gratitude, as a representative of Unidad Topia, for the opportunity provided by Reforestamos México. They already have this business vision in the forestry sector and are taking action by creating networks and initiatives like this. They have been with us throughout this process. They are great! To the BBVA Momentum team: You are excellent! The quality of your work is welcoming, efficient, punctual, innovative, charismatic, and much more.
Thank you for everything!
