Karla, Alexander and Cassandra, students of the Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of the UNAM did an internship with us and in the following text they share their experience about one of the activities in which they participated. Thank you for sharing your vision and enthusiasm!
Currently, several civil society organizations have managed to bring together thousands of people to work on issues of environmental and land ecosystem care awareness. One of these is Reforestamos México, which is committed to working for sustainability, generating forest goods and environmental services in abundance, achieving a life in harmony with nature, as well as securing forest resources for the common good of present and future generations.
The first thing that came to mind when someone talked about taking action for the environment was “reforesting”; however, having the opportunity to soak in the vision and mission of Reforestamos has given us the opportunity to understand that reforesting is not the only thing we can do for the environment. The organization highlights the importance of implementing long-term measures that generate an impact on the environment, with social and economic benefits.
Year after year, Reforestamos organizes a series of forestry events in which people can carry out activities such as cleaning, road maintenance and, of course, reforestation. In order for these activities to be more effective, and to complement the objective of generating awareness, a very important twist has been given to them: what makes the reforestations unique is that they are supported by small, medium and large companies, which provide financial support to carry out the projects. In addition, the companies bring their workers and the workers bring their families, and together they are in charge of reforestation.
In addition, the activities include people from the community where the reforested land is located. As a result, the activities become a space where families live together, create awareness, have fun, learn about forests and help maintain these ecosystems. As an example, last August 18, Reforestamos, with the support of the company HP, gave us the opportunity to support one of the reforestations carried out in the Nevado de Toluca, specifically in the site known as “Parque de los Venados”. The goal was to plant one thousand trees in one hectare.
