Certification of FSC® Forest Management for 7 ejidos and communities in the IztaPopo area, closest to CDMX
29 noviembre, 2023
Forests offer us a wide variety of ecosystem products and services, making it crucial to collaborate with landowners and landholders (communities and ejidos), strengthen their capacities to conserve and manage them responsibly, for human well-being and the balance of the global ecosystem. Today, Reforestamos México recognizes a significant achievement in the Izta-Popo region in the State of Mexico, which is committed to a more sustainable future.
Forest Management FSC® is an international certification standard that guarantees the preservation of environmentally suitable forests, ensuring the production of timber and non-timber products, and ecosystem services. This approach maintains the biodiversity, productivity, and ecological processes of forests. The use of forests must always be subject to good sustainable management, considering the benefit to local producers in Mexico.
The current environmental and climate challenges we face in the world require working with sustainable solutions, adopting sustainable practices in all aspects of society, and implementing policies that encourage environmental protection.
The Union for Forest and Agricultural Development of Valle México (UDEFAM), founded in 2019 as a Rural Production Society, has become a Community Forest Enterprise (EFC). It consists of 13 communities and ejidos, directly benefiting 3,118 people in the region. UDEFAM’s vision is to be a leading organization that generates social well-being through the sustainable management and preservation of natural resources.
Reforestamos México sought the collaboration of the Sertull Foundation, Santander, and the National Union of Communal Forestry Organizations (UNOFOC) to provide support in the sustainable use of their resources through strengthening and training of their productive activities. This collaboration promotes international certification by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which is present in more than 80 countries.
PROBOSQUE also collaborated, providing financial support for the group certification process of 7 UDEFAM partners (Ejido San Martin Cuautlalpan, Bienes Comunales San Pedro Ecatzingo, Bienes Comunales Amecameca, Ejido San Antonio Tlaltecahuacan, Bienes Comunales Santa Isabel Chalma, Ejido Santiago Cuautenco, Ejido Coatepec).
In August 2023, the Ejido San Antonio Tlatecahuacan in the municipality of Tlalmanalco, State of Mexico, began an audit process conducted by the certification entity “Preferred By Nature” with the aim of obtaining a group certification FSC in responsible Forest Management. This audit included visits to forests and documentary review to demonstrate good control, management, planning, responsibility, and commitment to the use of their forests. Technical support was provided through the consulting firms Grupo Forestal para la Administración Ambiental (FORAAM) and Montezumae Global.
In October 2023, these communities and ejidos achieved the approval of 12,673.41 hectares certified in responsible FSC Forest Management. This is an important way to contribute to the well-being of local communities. This certification is currently the closest to CDMX and represents a great opportunity to connect socially and environmentally responsible companies so that their consumption guarantees the conservation of ecosystems. Responsible consumption not only benefits communities by providing income and generating job opportunities but can also have a positive impact in terms of equity, cultural and environmental conservation, and community strengthening.
By providing sustainable management, resilience to climate change is also enhanced. CDMX faces significant water challenges due to climate change; therefore, conscious consumption decisions must be made to contribute significantly to sustainable development and the well-being of local communities.
