Forests: Natural Home for Businesses
16 julio, 2020
We often think of forests as our natural havens and generators of clean air, but today we want to talk about how they are also the home for businesses, sources of employment, and the engine of economic development for many forest communities.
Forest businesses provide us with a large number of products and services that, sometimes without realizing it, are fundamental to our daily lives. Here are some examples:
A large number of animal and plant species from the forest are studied to find active molecules that allow the development of new medicines. Around 10% of current medicines derive from medicinal plants that inhabit forests, mainly used for their therapeutic properties and to treat respiratory diseases, fever, kidney disorders, and even to reduce the risk of developing cancer.
Forests are also present in the clothing we wear. Many fabrics are made from plant fibers and barks such as cotton, linen, and esparto. Without these, it would be impossible to manufacture most garments as we know them.
Forests are indispensable for filtering pollutants before they end up in the atmosphere and contribute to climate change. They also serve as homes and livelihoods for more than 60 million people and 80% of the world’s biodiversity.
Many of us, to a greater or lesser extent, depend on the resources we can obtain from forests. It is thanks to forest businesses that have dedicated themselves for generations to preserving and utilizing timber resources that we have access to the benefits of these ecosystems today.
Today more than ever, supporting forest communities and businesses benefits us all.
